I've been thinking...

So who's got one and who still uses one on a daily basis? - lets see them in all there glory. Although having a classic status and making me feel old you just cant beat the reliability and ease of maintenance in your own workshop. However from a safety perspective make sure the servicing does get done, all the bits that move, move and all the bits that don't, don't. Check the guarding and connections/welds are still sweet. Like us fatigue starts to creep in on the main structural parts and things under pressure so have a look at those as well. Be sure to give these old girls (or boys/gender neutrals!) the TLC and time they need and while you are at it give yourself some too!

Last week I was called into Christchurch to assist with a repatriation flight. I considered what lay ahead when I got there and was more than confident with those organising that all the safety precautions possible had been taken, including my journey both ways. What I didn't consider though was the normally mundane subconscious task of driving, which for me under the "old normal" used to be second nature. However after 4 weeks of only driving to the local shop or the fire station this subconscious task was extraordinarily difficult. I actually had to really concentrate on what I was doing! This got me thinking... After any holiday period or time away such as Christmas or a long break whenever we return to work, we often see a significant spike in accidents and injuries, the statistics on farms at the start of 2020 tragically reflects this. There are several factors for this include being out of routine, fatigue and stress. With this in mind as we move through into the different levels all workplaces need to reassess their risks, check machinery, processes, and hazards alongside their teams health and the ability to carry out the task. So lets not go back into work full of complacency and resume the old way of doing things. Many things have changed in the last 4 weeks including the way we work and how we get there will be one of them. Return to work - Just take your time and don't run round like a headless chicken!

During these trying times with Covid-19 we too are also locked down. However we are working with the primary industry sectors and consolidating the advice and documents to make sense of it all for everyone! We have and will continue to turn all this into easy to use information for our farmers, growers and contractors.
